Lala Halsema is an award-winning director, writer, and producer whose work explores the beautiful complexities of human connection. Her directorial debut, Potluck, premiered with Diversity in Cannes during the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at 23 international festivals, earning 13 awards including Best Director, Best Comedy, and Audience Choice. She is known for her ability to lead collaborative, performance-focused sets and to bring out emotionally resonant performances grounded in truth and humanity.
Lala founded Shimmer Films in 2011 to tell character-driven stories that champion authenticity and humor. Since then, she has directed, written, and produced film and video projects spanning narrative shorts, branded content, television, and documentary work. She’s directed campaigns for major brands such as Home Depot, including a project with Vice President Al Gore.
With a foundation in theater and training from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Lala’s approach is actor-centered and story-forward. She is equally skilled in scheduling, production workflow, and set leadership, having also served as a 1st Assistant Director on multiple feature films, music videos, and commercial productions.
